Horney Melissa Horney is originally from Emporia, Kansas, but lived in Western Kansas for a little over 13 years on a farm after marrying her husband Keith. She taught second grade in a public school for four years, then stayed home with her two boys Keith and Chandler for four years, substituting from time to time. During the four years at home she was able to spend time with several Christian women from her community. It was at that time they began doing Home Bible Coffees with some of the moms in the area. They would meet and study a book of the Bible. Melissa did not realize at the time that she was not a Christian. She was not raised in a Christian home, but thought she was a Christian because she believed in God and went to church occasionally. Through the Bible study group one evening, she was studying John. She got down on her knees, confessed and asked for forgiveness of her sins and invited Jesus to be her Lord and Savior. However, she didn't share this information with another living soul. She believes she was saved at that point, but she was trying to develop a relationship with Jesus on her own without any support or direction from other Christians or the Holy Spirit. About 3 or 4 years later, after Keith received Jesus as his Savior, Melissa recommitted herself to a relationship with Christ and was able to grow and step out for God. She has seen Jesus totally transform the life of her family and says, "I thank God for the transformation He has made and continues to make in our lives." About a year and a half after being saved the Lord opened a door for Melissa to teach fifth and sixth grade at Heartland Christian School in Colby, Kansas. She was a little intimidated at first knowing her students would be much more knowledgeable of the Bible then she was. However, she says that what God brings you to He brings you through, and that was an amazing time in her life. It prepared her to know that she could depend on God. She also was able to work with some amazing Christians that were and continue to be shining examples of true servants for God. They are all leaders in what they do, but they are servants first which Melissa truly respects and hopes to grow and become more like them in her desire to serve God. Being the cook at King's Way is something Melissa never imagined herself doing. Melissa says, "If I were to make a list of 5 things I do well it would never occur to me to place cooking as a talent, but once again I find myself loving what I am doing. I still am not sure what the Lord has for me in the future, but from past experience I have come to learn that if I am willing to do the little things for the kingdom He uses that to train and prepare me for the next step." |
