Spanish Language & Missions Program

Missions Course

The mission courses at King's Way are designed to help prepare our students for 21st century world missions and specifically for ministry into the Spanish-speaking world whether it is in Latin America, Spain, Africa or the United States of America, the fifth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. Obviously the world today is a dynamic and rapidly changing place in many ways. Urbanization, the Internet, and other modern methods of communication and transportation all enter into the challenge of trying to stay relevant in our efforts to share the unchanging message of the Gospel with all the people groups of the world.

The following section describes in detail our missions courses.

Course Descriptions

MODERN MISSIONS IN LATIN AMERICA

  • In this fall semester class the focus is on ministry in Latin America and other places where Spanish-speakers live. Topics such as the history and geography of the region including missions history; cross-cultural living; religious influences; urbanization; the metric system; money exchange; problem areas such as how to relate to local law enforcement officials, border crossing tips and drug cartels; short-term missions; resources of missionary information and databases on the Internet; common family and marriage stresses faced by missionaries; the explosion of Hispanic missionaries from Latin America over that past ten years and how we should relate to them; and many other relevant topics are discussed. A number of key books are read during the semester and several short papers on mission-related topics are composed. The course is taught by on-site King's Way teachers as well as a number of qualified instructors from other ministries in the local and sometimes not-so-local area.

PERSPECTIVES ON THE WORLD CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT

  • During the Spring 2008 semester King's Way became an official host of the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course. The Perspectives course is now one of the main components of our mission training program and is taught not only to our students but to believers outside the school from many of the various evangelical churches here in the Rio Grande Valley. Perspectives is a college-level course taught at both non-credit and credit levels. Our students take the course at the Certificate Level, but undergraduate or graduate level credit is available in conjunction with Trinity International University. During Perspectives fifteen different instructors bring a wealth of experience and insight into the biblical, historical, cultural and strategic aspects of God's heart for the nations. Having the opportunity to take the Perspectives course at King's Way is a tremendous benefit for our students as many mission agencies nowadays require at least the Certificate Level of Perspectives as a prerequisite for their missionary candidates. For more details go to www.perspectives.org to explore the Perspective course's official website, which also provides many other links related to world missions and cross-cultural ministry as well as downloadable mission-related databases.
